From July 2002 dramatic changes to the regulations concerning registering .au Domain Names were introduced by the governing organisation auDA. Prior to this certain restrictions applicable especially to .com.au presented difficulties which have now been relaxed. New domain name suffixes have also been created offering wider scope for you to obtain a domain name more related to your business. Details of these changes and how they may effect you are as follows:--

The 5 Australian Domains and who can use them
.com
.net
.org
.asn
.id
Registering multiple domain names per business now allowed
The former limit of one domain per business no longer applies. Single entities may register as many domains as they require.
Name Derivation Rule has been replaced
Two new rules eliminate the requirement that your domain name has to comprise the bulk of wording of your business name. These are:
Abbreviation Rule Your domain name may now be
·
An exact match of your business name -- choose to include Pty. Ltd. etc.
·
An abbreviation of your business name -- John’s Marine Repairs could have marine.com.au --or-- repairs.com.au
·
An Acronym of your business name -- John’s Marine Repairs could have jmr.com.au
Close & Substantial Rule
If you can substantiate a close connection to your business then your domain name may be derived from one of six criteria listed below:
·
Product -- John’s Deli could have smallgoods.com.au
·
Service -- John’s Spit Hire could have rentals.com.au
·
Event -- John’s Photographic Studio could have models.com.au
·
Activity -- John’s Travel could have tourism.com.au
·
Venue -- John’s Tavern could have fridaynightpool.com.au
·
Profession -- John’s Dentistry could have dentist.com.au
Other major changes
Some Generic Words will be permitted apart from those reserved by auDA for auctioning.
Trade Marks either registered or formally pending now meet criteria for registering a .com.au domain name.
